General Information

The Middle School at Ceduna Area School is made up of students in year six to nine. In most classes students are taught by their Homegroup teacher for 3-4 subject areas. This is in line with the Middle School philosophy where students' education is closer to a primary class model with predominantly one teacher. Because of some specialisation with staff (in particular languages) this does not happen in all cases. Some classes may only have the Homegroup teacher for two subjects.

Many of the multi skilled staff who work in Middle School also work in other sections of the school. R-5 and Senior Secondary.

In all there are more than twenty teachers working in Middle School.

Pastoral Care

This program for Pastoral Care runs for both single and double lessons. It includes:-

  • Electives- generally offered every term

  • Personal development activities/ programs

  • Sports day preparation

  • Camp preparation and Fundraising

The Star Reader and Accelerated Reader Programs

The Star Reading and Accelerated Reader Programs were purchased by the school in 2004. The programs work together to initially assess the students' current reading levels (Star Reading). This diagnostic test not only provides a Zone of reading which is challenging without being frustrating for the reader, but also gives teachers and parents a host of information about the student as a reader.

Following the test, students then borrow books within their "Zone". At the completion of each book students take a quiz, which gives them and their teacher immediate feedback regarding understanding of the text.

Students in years 8/9 are now using the program and teachers are experimenting with the different kinds of reports generated by the monitoring program of Accelerated Reader.

Competition/ Special Programs

The school encourages the participation by students in competitions. Generally these are in subject areas- Mathematics, Science, Geography, Computing, English etc.

There are opportunities for skilled students to participate in sporting events such as Inter School Athletics, Cricket, Tennis, Swimming, Netball. Selected students may travel to Adelaide, Streaky Bay, Port Lincoln and other places for these activities.

Music students perform at Community events as well as School Assemblies, Field Days and concerts.
