New Video Conferencing Facilities

New Video Conferencing Equipment has been installed in Ceduna Area School. This equipment will allow us to have face to face video conferencing with most schools on Eyre Peninsula and the wider network of schools and to facilitate distance education for our students who will be able to join lessons at neighbouring schools and others who wish to join our lessons.

Submission Granted for New Canteen

We have received notification that we have been granted $150,000 through the Australian Governments Investing in our Schools Program for a new canteen. We hope to commence construction by the end of this year.

New Canteen Site

The security fencing went up around the New Canteen site late last week and the builders have been on site raising pavers and digging trenches and laying cables for the foundations this week.  At this stage the foundations will be poured over this coming weekend to limit the disruption to the school with trucks coming and going.

State Champion

Josh Seidl has been competing in Junior Squash competitions in Adelaide for the past two years. Recently the State Titles were held and Josh was able to retain the under 13 Boys Title. As a result of this, Josh has again been chosen for the State Squash team and will be competing in the Australian Junior Championships being held in Brisbane during the October holidays. Since his selection, Josh has travelled to Adelaide every fortnight to train with the State Team and receive further coaching.

Australian Cup

Competing in the National Championships in Canberra, Georgia Sleep covered herself in glory by coming 3rd in the Under 14 400 metre Australian Cup. This is an exceptional result for her to achieve particularly since it has been a number of years since a South Australian has even achieved a place in this event.

Congratulations Far West Athletes

During week 11 of last term our Far West Athletics team travelled to Adelaide to compete against all the other country districts from all over the state. Both our boys and our girls did extremely well. The Boys team excelled themselves to come 4th overall while the Girls team triumphed by coming first. This is a fabulous result for our District and our school. We had many standout individual performances as well.

South Australian Aboriginal Sports Academy

This term we have begun our new Sports Academy with 15 indigenous students being involved in completing SACE units in mainstream subjects whilst also being engaged in specific coaching and skill development in a variety of sports. The aim of this programme is to improve the attendance, engagement and academic success of our senior indigenous cohort rather than have them at greater risk of leaving school and having, less educational opportunities. The tennis clubhouse has been recently refurbished to make this the Sports Academy centre. Mr Peter Miller and Ms Lindsay Holness are the sports coaches employed for the football and netball sessions whilst a number of our staff are engaged in delivering the normal Year 10 and 11 courses.

Official Opening of our Library

Unfortunately the inclement weather which incorporated gale force winds and dust storms resulted in us having our Official Opening in the gymnasium yesterday. However we were pleased to have many members of the school and general community come along to join with us to hear Mr Des Whitmarsh give a brief history of the Community Library, followed by a message from the Federal Minister of Education MS Julia GIllard read by Ms Meralyn Stevens. We were then fortunate to have the Mayor of Ceduna Mr Alan Suter officially open the new Community School Library and the newly redeveloped grounds. It was pleasing to have former Principal Ms Flora Rumbelow, an instigator of this project, travel from Adelaide to join with us for the day.

Scott Lycett - One of State's Best

Ceduna Area School's Scott Lycett is looking forward to a career in the AFL after representing South Australia last week and being named in the best players in all the games he played.

The 200cm ruckman and forward played for South Australia in the 2008 AFL Under 16 National Championships at the Gold Coast from last Thursday, July 24th to Sunday, August 3rd.

He is also one of only three South Australians to be selected for an Australian Institute of Sports scholarship which will see him join 29 others in Canberra later in September to go through some intensive training in preparation for possible selection in upcoming AFL Drafts over the next couple of years.

SAASTA - Port Power Cup

Congratulations and well done to all who participated in our recent involvement in the Port Power Cup held at Alberton Oval. We competed against several other indigenous schools in a girls and boys 9 a side competition. By all accounts our students not only were great participants they also were excellent ambassadors for our school. So good were they that they had the opportunity to play against Para West Adult campus in the curtain raiser to the Port Adelaide AFL match last Friday night and did exceptionally well. Thankyou to Mr Sam Bourke, Sandy Ware, James Peel, Nicky Milpuddie, Peter Miller, Lindsay Holness and Conrad Newchurch who went along and helped coach and organise to make the trip the tremendous success it was. Very well done to all.
