  • Specialists Teachers (Physical Education and Indonesian and Art)

  • Aboriginal Education Teacher

Peer Support

Peer Support involves students from older classes planning and running sessions for the younger students. This helps to develop sound organisational and social skills in students and has proven to have many benefits out in the yard.

Accelerated Literacy Program

The Accelerated Literacy Program will be commencing in term 2, 2007. It is a highly supportive approach to English Literacy teaching. It aims to improve literacy levels for all students who are currently not achieving national benchmarks and has demonstrated significant improvements in education outcomes for indigenous students.

The teaching approach allows students to work with texts that are age appropriate. Each class focuses on one text each term.

As students begin to engage successfully with reading, the emphasis shifts to the development of high level decoding, spelling and eventually, writing strategies. Development across reading, writing and spelling is highly integrated. Children learn to spell and decode words they can already identify, following intensive comprehension work. Furthermore they learn to use the literate choices they have studied in comprehension activities in their own writing.

Student Representative Council

Student Representative Council is run by 5 students who form an executive and by the Counsellor. It allows all students in R-5 the opportunity to 'have a say' in their schooling, either through direct involvement in SRC or via their class representatives and class meetings.

Music

Music is very much enjoyed in R-5 with instrumental music being performed by the older students and music being learned in Junior Primary through non-contact lessons with a specialist teacher. Choir is also a popular activity for students in Years 4 and 5 and they perform at many school and community events.

Languages Other Than English

In Languages Other Than English all students in R-5 study either Pitjantjatjara / Wirangu (locally spoken Aboriginal Languages) or Indonesian. In Junior Primary, students complete one term of each language to get a 'taste' of the language and culture and then choose which language to continue with at various stages of their schooling.

Aboriginal Education

Aboriginal Education is supported in R-5 by the employment of Aboriginal Education Workers who work primarily with Aboriginal students to assist and extend them. All students learn about Aboriginal cultures to build their understanding and appreciation, and events such as NAIDOC Week are also celebrated.

Assemblies

Assemblies are held 2-3 times a term usually on Fridays at 11.30 followed by tea and coffee for those parents who wish to stay. They offer students and teacher the chance to showcase elements of their learning to parents and community visitors. Specific dates are advertised in School Newsletters.

Students with Disabilities

Students with Disabilities are catered for through specialist teachers and SSOs who plan and work with students in the Special Learning Centre and work with the classroom teachers to meet the individual needs of these students.

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment and Reporting  happens via interviews and Achievement Folders. Interviews are held in Terms 1 & 3 and give parents and teachers the opportunity to sit down and discuss the progress and needs of the students. Achievement Folders go home at the end of Terms 2 & 4 with examples of students' work, a checklist of English and Math skills and overall comments on all curriculum areas.

Transition Programs

Transition Programs run in order to provide a bridge between Kindy, Preschool and Reception, and again between Year 5 and Middle School. Transition Programs help to ease the process of change and assist the students to familiarise themselves with the people and places involved in the next stage of their learning.

Communication

Communication between families and the school is extremely important and is achieved through many means. Home folders and/or diaries are used by all classes as a form of written communication. Other forms used are phone calls, letters, home visits, open nights and school based meetings.

  • Road Watch: The classes in the section have adopted a section of road and once a term clean the section

  • Clean up Australia Day: On the Friday prior to this event the school students clean up sections of the community

  • Seniors: Once a term students visit centres where Senior Citizens live or meet. Students do short performances and share some of their work.

  • Oysterfest: Students participate in various activities and competitions offered as part of the Oysterfest.
